Firewood price in Riga: what it depends on and how to choose
The price of firewood in Riga depends mainly on three things: the wood species (birch, alder or mixed hardwood), the unit of measure (loose cubic metre or stacked cubic metre) and how dry the wood is. Compare offers on these three points and you will quickly see which cubic metre is really better value and how much heat you get for your money.
We produce our own firewood in Latvia and sell it in Riga with no middlemen. The current price per 1 m³ is shown instantly in the calculator on the split firewood (birch, alder, hardwood) page. Below we explain how to compare prices and how to choose firewood for your stove, fireplace or boiler.
What the firewood price depends on
1. Wood species
Hardwood firewood varies in density, and denser wood gives more heat per cubic metre. That is why birch firewood is usually the most expensive, alder is cheaper and mixed hardwood sits in between and suits larger volumes.
2. Loose vs stacked cubic metre
This is the most common source of confusion when people ask how much a cubic metre of firewood costs. Both are 1×1×1 m, but they contain different amounts of wood.
| Unit | What it is | Amount of wood |
|---|---|---|
| Stacked cubic metre (stere) | Logs neatly stacked into a 1 m³ pile | More wood, fewer gaps |
| Loose cubic metre | Logs tipped loosely into a 1 m³ volume | More gaps, less wood |
As a rough guide, one stacked cubic metre of split logs equals about one and a half loose cubic metres (the exact ratio depends on log length and shape). So a loose-cube price cannot be compared directly with a stacked-cube price. To check how our firewood is measured and the details of the current batch, call +371 29568256.
3. Moisture
Dry firewood gives noticeably more heat than fresh wood, because less energy is lost evaporating water. It also smokes less and leaves less soot in the chimney. As a general rule, firewood should be burned at a moisture content of roughly 20 % or below. Ask us by phone for the moisture of the current batch.
4. Quantity and delivery
The total also depends on how many cubic metres you order and where they go. Our delivery price is calculated by road distance as soon as you enter your address — see delivery. Free pickup is also possible from our warehouse at Vējstūru iela 3, Riga.
Birch or alder firewood?
- Birch — dense, gives plenty of heat and holds it for a long time. Good for daily heating, masonry stoves and boilers.
- Alder — lighter, burns evenly with less soot. Often chosen for saunas, fireplaces and smoking food.
- Mixed hardwood — good value when you need a large volume for the whole winter.
How to store firewood
Keep firewood under a roof but well ventilated, for example in a log store or a shed with gaps. Do not stack it straight on the ground; put boards or pallets underneath. Stack fresh deliveries rather than leaving them in a heap, so they dry faster and take less space.

FAQ
How much is a cubic metre of firewood in Riga?
It depends on the species: alder is usually the cheapest, birch the most expensive. The current price per 1 m³ is shown instantly in our calculator.
Which is cheaper — a loose or a stacked cubic metre?
A loose cubic metre is usually cheaper, but it holds less wood. Convert prices to the same unit before comparing.
How can I tell if firewood is dry?
Dry logs are lighter, often have cracks at the ends and sound sharp when knocked together. A moisture meter gives the exact figure.
How much firewood do I need for winter?
It depends on house size, insulation and your stove. Last season's consumption is the best guide.
Do you produce the firewood yourselves?
Yes, we prepare it ourselves in Latvia and sell directly as the producer.
